What to feed your new pet reptile to maximise their health
Just because they’re scaly and cold, does not mean your reptilian friend’s diet should be ignored. Providing the best nutrition - even for our scaly friends - can help prevent certain diseases and enhance their overall life expectancy.
But what is the ‘perfect diet’ for reptiles? There are many different factors you need to consider, such as how big or small your reptile is, what species they are, how often they need to be fed, and more!
So we’re here to help make the best choice possible!
Size
How big is your reptile?
Reptiles need to be fed different kinds of food, depending on their size. For example, as a smaller snake grows, gradually increase the food you feed it. Too much food can lead to weight problems or, in worst cases, death. Moderately adapt the portion of its food size to keep it growing well while also maintaining a healthy pet!
Young reptiles
Similar to humans, as we grow, so does our food intake. It’s the same with reptiles. Monitor the amount of food you provide. Are they eating it all super quick? Or perhaps they leave a bit for the next day. Use this information as a guide to understand how much to feed your reptile without risking overfeeding. Remember, food = growth, and without sufficient amounts, their growth can be stunted, But overfeeding can lead to health problems.
Nutrition
Different types of food contain different types of nutrients. For example, live insects, particularly crickets and super worms, contain more protein than dead insects. Provide your reptiles with the right kind of food in order to maximise their overall health.
Variety
Variety is very important when it comes to reptiles. Why? Because they need different types of food at different stages of their life.
For example, a baby turtle will need to be fed more protein as they require more protein in order to survive. As adult turtles, they don't need to have as much protein, so they will need to be fed other types of turtle food such as crickets, locusts, super worms, beetles, mealworms, wax worms and even silkworms.
As a reptile owner, it is important to learn what your reptile likes so you know what types of food to feed it. Afterall, keeping them happy is super important!
